2017 will be the second year of the Summer Trail Series. Here are some answers to questions we’ve heard from friends and interested runners so far:
What time do the races start?
All races start at 6:45pm. We encourage you to show up at least 20 minutes before the race start to pick up your race kit and hear our race directors explain the course.
Where do the races start?
The races start and finish at Group Use Area #2 in Birds Hill Park. Please don’t forget this important detail. We used to hold the Try-a-Trail races at the Birds Hill Ranch, but we have moved to a new location for the Summer Trail Series. There is ample parking and basic washrooms at the start/finish.
Can I register on the day of the race?
Not this year. While we aspire toward a laid-back atmosphere at our races, you’ll need to be on the ball enough to register before our races sell out. We are on track to sell out all three races in 2017. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to putting on a great event for our sell-out field of trail runners.
What should I bring to the race?
We recommend bringing a water bottle of some kind to carry with you during your run. We will have water available on the course, but in the previous incarnation of these races (the Try-a-Trail series) we typically only offered water at the half-way point. We expect some hot summer nights, so you may wish to have water with you throughout the race. We are also endeavouring to reduce the waste produced at each race, so we encourage you to bring a water bottle or cup you can use at the finish line to limit the use of disposable paper cups.
Trail shoes aren’t strictly necessary. As one of our volunteers likes to remind us, back when he started running, trail running shoes didn’t really exist. The lugs on trail running shoes can help with traction, though, so if you have some they are worth wearing. These races are held on twisting, rocky trails so a trail shoe with a little bit of protection around the toe is a good idea if you’re prone to tripping or kicking rocks. Finally, we encourage you to bring a sweater or some dry clothes so you can stick around after the race and enjoy the bonfire.
What’s your post-race snack situation?
Awesome, we’re told. We’ve had watermelon, hot dogs (including veggie dogs and gluten-free buns), cookies, gluten-free brownies, marshmallows, veggies and iced tea. We make a point of having really good snacks, including options for people with allergies or special diets.
Can I transfer my race bib to a friend if I can’t make it?
Yes. Your friend can race with your bib and we don’t charge a transfer fee. We do however, need your friend to sign a waiver at the pre-race registration. Your friend should let us know that it’s not their name on the registration so we can give them a waiver to sign and make sure their name appears in the results.

We do our best to post results on this website within 24 hours of the race.
What are your prizes?
We award a $50 cash prize to the male and female winner of each race. Thanks to our great sponsors, City Park Runners and The North Face, we have previously boasted draw prizes for runners and volunteers, too. Stay tuned for details on our 2017 offerings.
